The Long Beach Island Consolidated School District (LBICSD) will start an in-school food waste composting program for grades K-6. Composting concepts will be integrated into all curriculum content areas and community extensions will be created.

COASTAL COMMUNITY COMPOSTING (CCC) provides a partial solution to an issue of great concern in our community. The Ocean County Landfill is filling up quickly and is anticipated to close within ten years. Composting provides a way of not only reducing the amount of waste that needs to be disposed of, but also of converting it into a product that is useful for nurturing our gardens. As compost eliminates the need for fertilizers, it also addresses the island-wide problem of storm water runoff as nutrients run down storm drains directly into bordering bay waters.
